On the morning of July 21, police dispatch in Beaverhead County, Mont., received a call about a roll-over vehicle crash on the interstate. Highway Patrol was advised that the vehicle occupants had been picked up by a passerby and dropped off in a nearby town. Shortly afterward, a citizen there called, concerned about two males looking into cars. When officers arrived, the two men fled into the densely wooded area. Police continued to seek the two using K9s and drones with infrared cameras, whereupon one suspect turned himself in. It appeared the other got away, but finally, in the afternoon, an armed citizen notified police he had discovered an intruder on his ranch and held the man held at gunpoint until police could arrive. This suspect was found to have been on the run since escaping a pre-release detention center. (southwesternmontananews.com; Dillon, Mont., 7/22/22)
A 19-year-old man reportedly shot another man to death during the morning of Aug. 29 in Detroit, Mich., in an unprovoked attack, even leaving the scene and returning to fire more shots at him. The assailant then walked three blocks and shot and killed a woman; a neighbor there called 911. As police investigated these two incidents, they heard more shots fired nearby, where the same assailant shot another woman waiting for the bus. The gunman then continued his rampage, firing on an 80-year-old man and his dog. Seeing this latest attack, an armed citizen fired back, whereupon the assailant “scattered like a jackrabbit,” according to a witness. “He went from predator to prey,” noted the armed citizen who stopped the attack. A community tip later led to the suspect’s arrest. (wxyz.com [further details also on wxyz.com], Detroit, Mich., 8/29/22)
