A 30-year-old mother of three in San Antonio, Texas, heard a commotion around 10 p.m. on April 28, which turned out to be a man breaking into her home through her laundry room. To protect herself and her sleeping children, she retrieved her firearm and shot the 41-year-old intruder twice in the chest. When police officers arrived, they found the wounded intruder sitting in a chair in the woman’s backyard. They transported him to the hospital, but he died of his injuries on the way. In accordance with castle doctrine in the state, no charges were expected to be brought against the homeowner. (fox7austin.com, Austin, Texas, 4/28/22 and nypost.com, New York, NY, 5/2/22)
In Tacoma, Wash., three hotel workers were attacked by a 45-year-old man and known troublemaker, who was armed with a knife. The man came into the hotel and was behaving oddly when he was asked to leave the premises. When he refused to leave, someone called 911. However, the police were not able to respond before the threat escalated, when the trespasser allegedly started threatening people with his knife. One of the hotel employees—a 32-year-old woman—responded to the threat by shooting the attacker, causing non-life-threatening injuries. Once the man was released from the hospital, he was to be booked on suspicion of first-degree felony assault. None of the employees was wounded, and the interaction was captured by the hotel video surveillance. (q13fox.com, Seattle, Wash., 5/4/22)
