Tale Of Two Party Platforms

Sure, when politicians are caught saying what they really believe at some high-class private fundraiser, thanks to the video camera on someone’s cell phone, they might argue they misspoke or were taken out of context. But there is nothing so intentional as a party platform. And when it comes to your civil rights—of which the Second Amendment is paramount—there has never been so stark a difference between the official Democratic National Committee (DNC) and the Republican National Committee (RNC) platforms.

Ignoring these platforms and instead believing the rhetoric from Hillary Clinton, in which she claims she really doesn’t want to change the Second Amendment or ban guns, is not just putting your head in the sand, but it is closing your mind as you willingly hand your freedom away. For 2016, the DNC is only partially hiding what it wants to do with your guns behind lawyerly and misleading phrases.

For 2016, the DNC is only partially hiding what it wants to do with your guns behind lawyerly and misleading phrases. This time the Democrats say:

“[They will expand and strengthen background checks and close dangerous loopholes in our current laws; repeal the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) to revoke the dangerous legal immunity protections gun makers and sellers now enjoy; and keep weapons of war—such as assault weapons and large capacity ammunition magazines (LCAMs)—off our streets. We will fight back against attempts to make it harder for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives to revoke federal licenses from law-breaking gun dealers, and ensure guns do not fall into the hands of terrorists, intimate partner abusers, other violent criminals, and those with severe mental health issues. There is insufficient research on effective gun prevention policies, which is why the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention must have the resources it needs to study gun violence as a public health issue.”

OK, let’s decode this: The Democrats would push for federal “universal” background check laws (“universal” is in quotes because criminals by definition wouldn’t submit to it); they would again allow activists to sue gun manufacturers and retailers for damages when criminals illegally use lawfully produced guns to commit crimes; and by “weapons of war,” they mean AR-15s or modern sporting rifles in general, so they’re saying they would ban entire classes of popular semi-automatic firearms even though, according to the FBI, these firearms are used in less than 2.5 percent of murders and have been for sale for generations. They also would ban gun magazines for arbitrary reasons; by keeping guns out of the hands of “terrorists, intimate partner abusers, other violent criminals,” they are referring to their desire to add government blacklists to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) and to expand other banned categories that would take away American citizens’ due process under the law; and, finally, they want to use government funds (your money) to pay for blatantly political anti-gun studies.

In contrast, the GOP platform says:

“We uphold the right of individuals to keep and bear arms, a right which antedated the Constitution and was solemnly confirmed by the Second Amendment. We acknowledge, support, and defend the law-abiding citizen’s God-given right of self-defense. We call for the protection of such fundamental individual rights recognized in the Supreme Court’s decisions in District of Columbia v. Heller and McDonald v. Chicago affirming that right, and we recognize the individual responsibility to safely use and store firearms. This also includes the right to obtain and store ammunition without registration. We support the fundamental right to self-defense wherever a law-abiding citizen has a legal right to be, and we support federal legislation that would expand the exercise of that right by allowing those with state-issued carry permits to carry firearms in any state that issues such permits to its own residents. Gun ownership is responsible citizenship, enabling Americans to defend their homes and communities. We condemn frivolous lawsuits against gun manufacturers and oppose federal licensing or registration of law-abiding gun owners. We oppose legislation that is intended to restrict our Second Amendment rights by limiting the capacity of clips or magazines or otherwise restoring the ill-considered Clinton gun ban. We condemn the reckless actions associated with the operation known as ‘Fast and Furious,’ conducted by the Department of Justice, which resulted in the murder of a U.S. Border Patrol agent and others on both sides of the border. We applaud the members of the U.S. House of Representatives in holding the current administration’s attorney general in contempt of Congress for his refusal to cooperate with their investigation into that debacle. We oppose the improper collection of firearms sales information in the four southern border states, which was imposed without congressional authority.”

Obviously, there is nothing in the GOP platform on the Second Amendment that needs to be decoded.Obviously, there is nothing in the GOP platform on the Second Amendment that needs to be decoded. It is straightforward and clear.

The choice is also clear. If you want to own guns, to shoot recreationally, to carry a handgun for self-defense and more, Clinton’s official party platform would impede, restrict and ban your freedom at every turn. In contrast, the RNC’s platform would enhance your freedom.

Additionally, although the DNC’s platform says it is “committed to ensuring full equality for women,” they are clearly not interested in giving women their most basic right—their right to self-preservation. And although the DNC says it “will appoint judges who defend the constitutional principles of liberty and equality for all,” they don’t include the Second Amendment in this promise.

Meanwhile, the GOP begins its platform by saying, “This platform is dedicated with appreciation and reverence for: The wisdom of the Framers of the United States Constitution, who gave us a Republic, as Benjamin Franklin cautioned, if we can keep it.”
