There is no one-size-fits-all approach to school security. In an effort to better equip law enforcement, security personnel and school systems in their pursuit of safer schools and communities, the NRA School Shield (NSS) program was launched in December 2012 with a singular mission—to protect our children. Through its Security Assessor Training, the NSS program teaches designated officials how to conduct school vulnerability assessments, empowering communities with this vital skill and important curriculum.
In 2019, NSS will have its busiest year yet—with 16 trainings scheduled in just the first half of the year. To date, NSS has completed trainings in: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Washington. By June 2019, more than half of the 50 states will have taken advantage of this popular training.
To facilitate the vital partnership between schools and their local law enforcement agencies, the NSS requires both a k-12 school and a local law enforcement agency to serve as co-hosts for the week-long training—which is free to host, free to attend and provided by the NRA. Conducted in both a classroom and in the field at a local school campus by certified NRA instructors (who are current or former law enforcement officers), the NSS Security Assessor Training focuses on detecting threat potential and security weaknesses day and night as well as on and around a school campus.
Through this training, School Resource Officers, School Security Officers, supervisors within community policing units, school facilities personnel and other officials tasked with a direct responsibility for school security, benefit from a week of specialized training, networking and practical exercises at a local K-12 school. Training topics include the assessment process, physical-security components, emergency-response protocols, emerging technologies and more.
Members can take advantage of this essential hands-on curriculum and help make their area schools more secure.
