Doctors, lawyers and women are among the people of Chicago who are helping demand skyrocket for gun permits.

Nearly 6,000 people applied for a Firearm Owner’s Identification Card (FOID) in January in Cook County, where some 10,000 people applied for the permit last year, according to local news reports.

“They’re just the kind of people that normally, naturally aren’t involved with firearms,” Daniel Conidi, a longtime shooting instructor. “People that never shot a gun. They just really feel this need to protect themselves and their family from the crime problems we’re seeing in Chicago.”

Conidi described as “very interesting” the types of people who recently have begun to obtain gun permits, noting that many have been “professional people, doctors, lawyers.”
