Maryland Bill To Ban Guns On Campus Passes House

posted on March 17, 2016

Maryland already has some of the strictest gun-control laws on the books, but that’s seemingly not enough for some of the state’s lawmakers. Democratic Del. Ben Barnes’ proposed legislation to ban guns on college campuses passed through the House on Tuesday.

If approved by the Senate, it will head to Republican Gov. Larry Hogan’s desk where, a spokesman says, the governor has “no intention of altering existing gun laws.” Maryland law allows for each campus to establish its own firearm policies as long as they don’t violate state law. No campus currently allows concealed firearms.

State Democrats, meanwhile, continue to plead ignorance: “I can’t conceive of a school system with this in place,” said Del. William C. Smith. He is apparently unaware that, in addition to Maryland, 22 other states leave campus carry up to each university, and in six states—soon to be eight—campus carry is fully legal.
