Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat who is expected to be named House speaker once the new Congress is seated early next year, has set her mind on having gun control at the top of the agenda.

Among her priorities is what she’s calling “universal background checks.”

Wait. Don’t we already have those? Maybe what she means to say is to change the rules regarding the current background-check system.

Regardless of the apparent lack of ability to voice her views clearly, one thing you can count on is that it any change to the background-check system will do nothing to curtail the use of firearms in crime. What it will do is this: it will make it more difficult for law-abiding citizens to exercise their Second Amendment right.

It’s what we’ve come to expect from the anti-gunners. Every time there is a shooting that gets a vast amount of media coverage, the first thing they do is blame guns—not the gunman, not the effects of broken families, not the bureaucracy that makes holding someone with a mental illness so difficult.

Of course, any legislation the House passes has to be approved by the Senate and signed by the president, so the new Democrat-controlled House still faces some tough sledding. But expect in the coming months to hear a lot about how they’re going to change our gun laws, which is sure to eliminate crime. Yeah, because we all know that criminals obey all the laws, right?
