Country artist JJ Lawhorn is a self-described good ole boy. Originally from rural Virginia, Lawhorn lives a life many country artists only sing about. He counts hunting, fishing and working the land as a few of his hobbies, so much so that he named his most recent album “The Huntsman.”

“There has never been a ‘soundtrack’ for hunters so I decided to change that,” said Lawhorn of the new music. NRA Country’s Vanessa Shahidi got a chance to ask Lawhorn a few questions about what makes him NRA Country.

VS: What is your favorite personal firearm?

JL: I love my Ithaca XL900 shotgun. It was my grandfather’s before me. I call her “Ol’ Betsy.” It sports a 36-inch barrel. And every time I hold the gun, all the good memories of me, my grandpa and my uncle afield flood my mind. I wrote a song on the new album about just how much she means to me.

VS: Does your love for the great outdoors impact your songwriting?

JL: I make music about the things I know and the life I live. I grew up on a farm and now have my own. Living the outdoorsman lifestyle has directly shaped the landscape of my music. I love hunting, farming, making music and sharing my passion for the outdoors. Hunting is embedded deep within our American heritage; our forefathers didn’t have a grocery store, and millions of Americans still provide food for our families by hunting for it. George Washington hunted and I do, too! So I hope “The Huntsman” also gives insight on what hunting is really about, to folks who don’t know or have never seen it in a positive light.
