An NRA-certified firearm instructor is continuing his mission to teach Detroit-area women how to be prepared to defend themselves with guns. Rick Ector started the free program seven years ago, and sets aside one day a year to teach women the basics of firearm safety and how to shoot.

The goal is to get 800 people to sign up for the introductory class. Participants will be taught to hold and load a 9 mm handgun, and they will get to shoot 21 rounds of ammunition. The class is free, but online registration is required, and proof of registration must be presented before the course.

Guns and ammunition will be supplied. The class will be held May 20 at the Top Gun Sports Range in Taylor, Mich.

Any student must be lawfully able to possess and shoot firearms. Registration opens May 13 at the Facebook page linked above. Participants are required to choose one of three time slots, and to stick to the chosen time.

Ector said some there will be raffles and other activities available.

Participants should be aware that the goal is to introduce women to guns and allow them to get a sense of what firing a gun is like. It is not intended to be stand-alone training or enough so that you can feel completely confident in your skills after this class. Rather, this brief session should be viewed as a preview of what you can learn with more complete training and practice.
