California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) wants a new constitutional amendment.

“Today Governor Gavin Newsom proposed a 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution to enshrine fundamental, broadly supported gun safety measures into law. While leaving the 2nd Amendment unchanged and respecting America’s gun-owning tradition, the Governor’s proposal guarantees common sense constitutional protections and gun safety measures,” read a press release from Newsom’s office.

His proposal is broken down into four parts, which he claims are broadly supported by the American people. As the California governor puts it, “The 28th will enshrine 4 widely supported gun safety freedoms -- while leaving the 2nd Amendment intact.”

These “freedoms,” according to Newsom, include raising the minimum age to purchase a firearm from 18 to 21, implementing a so-called “universal” background check law, constitutionally mandating a “reasonable” waiting period for gun purchases, and banning whatever might be deemed an “assault weapon.”

Gavin Newsom’s “stunt once again shows that his unhinged contempt for the right to self-defense has no bounds. California is a beacon for violence because of Newsom’s embrace of policies that champion the criminal and penalize the law-abiding. That is why the majority of Americans rightfully reject his California-style gun control,” tweeted the NRA in response to Newsom’s announcement.

Stay tuned for an in-depth analysis of this foolish proposal from a governor who has allowed crime to flourish within his state.
