A bill now moving through the California Assembly would expand the state’s automatic 10-year ban on gun ownership to a much larger pool of individuals convicted of misdemeanors, including offenses that are not even illegal outside California.
The legislation, SB 347, introduced in April by Democrat Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson, would lengthen the state’s list of offenses that trigger an automatic, 10-year prohibition on gun ownership to include misdemeanors such as selling or giving ammunition to a minor; transferring a handgun without a license; and possession of an unregistered firearm. It’s possible that some of these prohibitions could entrap innocent, otherwise lawful gun owners who give or lend firearms or ammunition to relatives without knowing California’s requirements.
