Competitive shooter Bruce Piatt was asked: How were you introduced to shooting?
“I grew up with my grandfather’s gun collection on display in glass-doored bookcase turned gun case which was hand built by my great-grandfather. After WWII, my father didn’t shoot or hunt anymore but it didn’t stop him from answering the thousands of questions I had as a boy. Hearing of my families hunting traditions and reading every American Rifleman I could find in the neighbor’s trash, I, too, asked to go hunting. Living in New York City’s suburban sprawl, hunting and shooting opportunities were near nil but I would not be deterred. I recall my father saying, ‘If you are going to hunt … you are going to do it safely,’ as he signed me up for an NRA Junior Small-bore rifle program at a nearby indoor range. From then on the hook was set. … I’ve been a shooter through and through.”
Bruce Piatt’s shooting disciplines included Action Pistol, Tactical 3-Gun, USPSA/IPSC, Steel Challenge and Sportsman’s Team Challenge. A highlight of Bruce’s competition career was getting married in 1993 and spending his honeymoon competing at and winning his first Bianchi Cup in Columbia, Mo. Bruce is the founder of Bruce Piatt Training Concepts, LLC and provides R&D consulting to firearm industry manufacturers, shooting instruction and is a valued industry spokesperson.
