The NRA announced its support for a lawsuit that challenges severe restrictions against gun ownership in Boulder, Colo. The Colorado State Shooting Association, a Boulder gun shop and two private citizens sued Boulder last week, seeking an injunction against a recently passed ban on so-called assault weapons.
One of the key arguments is that the law is illegal because it is not in line with state law.
Among other things, the law requires that owners of certain guns receive a certificate of ownership from the city, it prohibits the sale and possession of firearms by people under 21, and it outlaws the open carry of rifles and shotguns.
The NRA issued a release expressing its support for the suit. The Colorado State Shooting Association is a state affiliate of the NRA.
“We will not stand by and allow the misguided gun control extremists on the city council to strip us of our rights,” said Anthony Fabian, the state group’s executive director.
This is the second lawsuit to challenge whether the Boulder City Council overstepped its bounds. The first was filed within 24 hours of the council approving the tight restrictions.
