Teachers, Students Freak Over Librarian Pictured Holding Gun

posted on February 21, 2017

A recent incident at William H. Taft Educational Campus—which houses six small high schools in Bronx, N.Y.— begs the question of whether students are being taught about the Constitution.

After a photo taken of chief librarian Elizabeth Ervin made the rounds on social media, students were all too eager to offer up their opinion. The picture showed Ervin in a gun shop holding an AR-15 and smiling.

Many students cracked jokes, but others were alarmed. “It makes me feel insecure and uncomfortable,” said a freshman at Bronx Collegiate Academy. “Teachers shouldn’t have guns.” One of Ervin’s fellow co-workers condemned the photo as “disgusting.”

It’s ironic that those who are exercising their First Amendment right of speech choose to use it to vilify someone exercising their Second Amendment right to bear arms. Perhaps it’s time for the school to offer a refresher on freedom and the U.S. Constitution.
