Armed Officer Handcuffed And Denied Medical Treatment

posted on April 17, 2015

You probably don’t expect to encounter a problem if you seek routine medical attention at a facility that doesn’t post a “no firearms” sign, especially if you’re a cop. But one such patient recently found himself encountering trouble at a clinic in Mansfield, Ohio.

Wayne Liggett Sr., a policeman from the nearby town of Plymouth, mentioned out of courtesy that he was carrying a firearm when he visited the clinic for problems with his eyesight. The next thing he knew, he was escorted out of the room by local officers at gunpoint and handcuffed while his employment status was verified. Even after the incident was resolved, he was denied treatment at the facility.

According to both state and federal law, officers are exempt from businesses’ rules prohibiting concealed carry. It’s not clear how the clinic justifies the decision to escort Officer Liggett from their facility and deny him the treatment he needed.
